Abstract: Il pensiero occidentale è da sempre caratterizzato da un pensiero binario asimmetrico, di cui le opposizioni uomo/donna e mente/corpo rappresentano solo due tra gli assi concettuali più importanti. Si tratta di opposizioni tra termini mai tra loro equivalenti, dualismi da sempre funzionali alle pratiche del dominio: sulle donne, sulla gente di colore, sulla natura, sui lavoratori, sugli animali. La nascita del cyborg, da metafora fantascientifica a condizione umana, però cambia questo stato di cose. Perché il cyborg è al contempo uomo e macchina, individuo non sessuato situato oltre le categorie di genere. La pretesa naturalità dell'uomo è quindi solo una costruzione culturale, poiché oggi tutti noi siamo in qualche modo dei cyborg. L'uso di protesi, lenti a contatto, by-pass è solo un esempio di come la scienza sia compenetrata nel quotidiano e abbia trasformato il corpo. Se il corpo può venire trasformato e gestito, esso non è più sede di una presunta naturalità contrapposta all'artificialità e non possiamo più pensare all'uomo in termini esclusivamente biologici. Il cyborg non è quindi né macchina né uomo, né maschio né femmina, situato oltre i confini delle categorie che normalmente utilizziamo per interpretare il mondo

Accade ogni volta che rifiutano di chiamarvi avvocata, sindaca o architetta perché altrimenti «dovremmo dire anche farmacisto». Succede quando fate un bel lavoro, ma vi chiedono prima se siete mamma. Quando siete le uniche di cui non si pronuncia mai il cognome, se non con un articolo determinativo davanti. Quando si mettono a spiegarvi qualcosa che sapete già perfettamente, quando vi dicono di calmarvi, di farvi una risata, di smetterla di spaventare gli uomini con le vostre opinioni, di sorridere piuttosto, e soprattutto di star zitta. Questo libro è uno strumento che evidenzia il legame mortificante che esiste tra le ingiustizie che viviamo e le parole che sentiamo. Ha un'ambizione: che tra dieci anni una ragazza o un ragazzo, trovandolo su una bancarella, possa pensare sorridendo che per fortuna queste frasi non le dice più nessuno.
